1st Quarter Newsletter
A Strong Start to the Year!
As we enter the second quarter of 2025, New Era Creative Space (NECS) is excited to reflect on the incredible milestones achieved in the first few months of the year. This winter season has been filled with creativity, growth, and community engagement, from professional development for our teaching artists to exciting new programs and impactful performances.
Professional Development & Growth
We kicked off the winter session with a Staff Professional Development Day, setting the stage for a season of learning and collaboration. Layli Muro Consulting led our team in a powerful workshop on conflict resolution and fostering an inclusive culture, reinforcing our commitment to creating a nurturing and equitable learning environment.
Welcoming Families and Expanding Programs
On January 4th, we hosted our Winter Open House, welcoming families to explore our diverse programs. We carried over several successful programs from the fall while introducing three exciting new programs:
- Pop Choir – Encouraging students to express themselves through music.
- Creative Dance – Promoting movement and self-expression.
- Digital Art Portfolio Building – Helping young artists develop skills and build professional portfolios.

A Bad Case of Stripes – A Theatrical Success!
In February, our student production of A Bad Case of Stripes: The Musical was a resounding success, attracting an audience of nearly 300 people over three performances!
Student Reflection: “This program, as always, went above and beyond my expectations. Everything in NECS is always better than you think it will be.”
Audience Feedback: “Everything was amazing. The enthusiasm of the young actors and actresses made it most enjoyable. Also, the obvious love they have for each other and for humanity in general is the most encouraging experience I have ever had. The song at the end made us all cry with love. There IS hope for humanity if this is the sentiment of our young people! Thank you for running an amazing program! I will continue to support you.”
Parent Perspective: “Yes, our daughter loved it and had lots of fun with it while growing artistically and evolving as an individual.”
The production, which began rehearsals in October and culminated in performances on February 28 and March 1, involved 19 students.
Growing Our Presence in Peekskill Schools
Our impact continues to grow as we deepen our partnership with Peekskill City School District, where we offer afterschool programs in three schools; Peekskill Housing Authority, offering three days of afterschool programs and dinner; and a weekly theater workshop at the Children’s Village. These programs provide creative outlets and foster leadership, teamwork, and artistic exploration.
Additionally, we launched an exciting skateboarding program in partnership with Keaton’s Kids and the 2nd Nature Skate Park. We take our Dunbar Heights students twice a week to learn skateboarding. Just two weeks in, students are already building balance, coordination, teamwork, and focus skills—all while having tons of fun!
Celebrating Art at NECS
At NECS, we believe in the power of art to inspire, teach, and transform. Our space now serves as a local art gallery, showcasing the work of talented artists each month. Since January, we have hosted three exhibitions, allowing our students to be surrounded by incredible artwork every time they come to class. In May, we will proudly present a student art exhibit, celebrating the creative expression of our young artists. In June, our teaching artists will be able to exhibit their work, allowing our students to learn from and be inspired by the professionals who guide them. Having these exhibitions in our space reinforces the importance of children being immersed in art and the creative process daily, enriching their learning experience and nurturing their artistic growth.
