We started 2024 with a commitment to growth and reflection. On January 3, our team gathered for an enriching staff training session focused on culturally responsive teaching. We set the tone for a year of meaningful engagement by delving into the nuances of various cultures, exploring the depths of implicit bias, and equipping ourselves with practical tools to become more conscientious educators. Shortly thereafter, we dived into our winter season, collaborating with school districts and community programs to bring the transformative power of the arts to our local communities.

Our journey of self-improvement and community building continued on March 23 with our inaugural annual retreat. Set against camaraderie and shared purpose, the retreat provided a space for our teaching artists to recharge, connect, and reflect deeply on our collective mission and values. Together, we envisioned the culture we aspire to cultivate for ourselves, our students, and our families, reaffirming our commitment to fostering an inclusive and nurturing environment.

Honoring Resilience and Artistry

Our theatre students displayed remarkable resilience and creativity this Winter. Despite facing the sorrowful loss of one of our theater parents, we came together as a community to support his family and honor his memory. With unwavering dedication and courage, our students continued their work on the theatrical production of “Giants in the Sky,” dedicating this year’s performance to the late David Flores. The heartfelt dedication paid off on February 2nd and 3rd as our productions debuted to an enthusiastic audience, showcasing the talent and resilience of our students. Despite a few inevitable challenges, our community rallied together, demonstrating that we are a supportive and resilient family.

Expanding Horizons in Arts and Leadership

This winter marked a period of expansion and innovation for our programs. In addition to our established offerings, we proudly introduced two new programs: digital art and portrait and still life photography. As we continue strengthening our existing programs, including visual and performing arts programs in various educational and community settings, we remain committed to providing diverse avenues for artistic expression and personal growth. From therapeutic theater to arts and yoga initiatives, we strive to empower individuals of all ages and backgrounds through the transformative power of the arts.

Celebrating Impact and Recognition

As we reflect on our achievements, we are humbled by the recognition bestowed upon us. Our Executive Director, Ridvan Idara, was honored during Women’s History Month for her exemplary leadership and dedication to our community. Additionally, ArtsWestchester selected NECS to receive the prestigious Advancing Equity award, acknowledging our unwavering commitment to inclusivity and creativity. These accolades serve as a testament to the passion and dedication of our team and the transformative impact of our programs.

A Home for Community Enrichment

In our quest to expand our impact and reach, we have actively sought a permanent home for our programs. Recognizing the need for a centralized space to foster collaboration and community engagement, we have identified a promising location and have initiated discussions with the City of Peekskill and various partners. With the potential to create a vibrant hub for artistic expression and community enrichment, we eagerly anticipate the opportunities.
